History[]

The Prowlers began as a charter member of the CF2 - an 8-team league that was created in 2015 as a "minor league" of sorts for the CFA. Owned as a joint venture between Pittsburgh companies U.S. Steel and Consol Energy, the team selected Jerome Bettis - one of the most well-known and well-liked football figures in the Pittsburgh area - as its first head coach. He remains the only head coach the Prowlers have ever had.

CF2 (2015-2017)[]

2015[]

In their inaugural season, the Prowlers finished with a record of 5-9 - last place in the CF2's Continental Conference. They were led by quarterback Arthur Gallegos, who started 12 of 14 games and completed 59% of his passes for 2,736 yards with 13 TD's and 12 INT's. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for his performance. William Boswell rushed for 914 yards and 5 TD's, while also catching 48 passes for 231 yards and 2 TD's. This type of "dual threat" ability would become a hallmark of Boswell's career, one he continues to exemplify to this day. The dynamic duo of receivers Clifton Harper and William Elliott combined to catch 133 passes for nearly 1,800 yards and 8 TD's, while 6' 11" tight end Nicholas Andre (known to teammates and fans as "Andre The Giant") added 565 yards and a pair of TD catches.

The defense was captained by safety Barton Jude, who racked up an impressive 116 tackles with 4 INT's, 3 forced fumbles and a sack. Cornerback David Cheung intercepted 5 passes and managed to return two of them for touchdowns. Defensive end Virgil Johnston led the team with 5 sacks. Despite those statistics, the unit gave up a whopping 376 yards per game to opposing teams, which placed them last in the league in defensive efficiency.

2016[]

2016 was the most successful season in the Prowlers' CF2 existence, but that success did not come easy. Gallegos suffered a broken jaw in Week 2 and his replacement, Ryan Allen, broke his leg in Week 6. Third-stringer Justin Keyes was ineffective, so Pittsburgh turned to Kevin Sellers, who began the season on the practice squad, to lead the team at quarterback. Sellers went 3-1 as the interim starter, and Gallegos returned in Week 12 as the Prowlers finished with a record of 7-7. That was good enough for second place in the Continental Conference and a berth in the playoffs, where they would face the heavily-favored Kansas City Cougars and their vaunted ground attack.
